We watched the play “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“on January 19, in the Audimax of the University of Hamburg. This adaptation of the original novel was written by Jeffrey Hatcher. The play was directed by Miriam Barbi and produced by the University Players. Most people know this famous story about a doctor with two personalities, but this play was different because of some clever, creative choices.
In this version, Dr. Jekyll is played by one actor, but four different actors play Mr. Hyde. This was a great idea because it shows that evil does not just have one face. Hyde is a group of different voices and personalities—some are violent, and some are very intelligent.
Watching this in a theatre made the experience very intense, because the actors were so close to the audience, the danger felt real.
The play is set in London during the Victorian era. The stage was very simple, with only a door and some fog. However, the lighting and sound created a very dark and scary atmosphere.
The actors were very good. The man playing Dr. Jekyll showed us a character who was slowly losing control of his life. The other actors moved very quickly between roles, sometimes playing Jekyll’s friends and then suddenly becoming the evil Mr. Hyde. This made the play feel fast and exciting, but also a bit confusing and hard to follow at times.
What I liked most was that this play is more than just a horror story. It is a psychological drama. It asks the question: „Is there a dark side inside all of us?“
It was a fantastic night at the theatre. If you like stories that are dark and maybe even a bit frightening, you should definitely go see it.
