DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE review #6

By Erik & Noah (Gymnasium Altona)

Our english class and we visited the theatre „Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde“ by Robert Louis Stevenson yesterday.

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is about a respectable scientist, Dr. Henry Jekyll, who creates a potion that splits his personality in two. One side remains the kind, moral Jekyll, while the other becomes Mr. Edward Hyde, a cruel and violent man who acts without guilt.

At first, Jekyll enjoys separating his darker impulses, but Hyde grows stronger and begins to take over without the potion. Hyde commits murder, and Jekyll realizes he can no longer control the transformation. In the end, Jekyll sacrifices himself to stop Hyde, showing that good and evil exist together within every person.

The director’s interpretation of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde focused on the inner conflict of the main character rather than on horror. The production showed Jekyll and Hyde as two parts of the same person, not as completely separate characters. This idea was made clear through the staging and movement on stage. The pacing was mostly effective and helped build tension, although at some moments the message was too obvious and left little room for mystery.

The acting was a strong part of the performance. Both the actor playing Dr Jekyll and the actor playing Mr Hyde performed their roles very convincingly. The actor portraying Jekyll showed calmness and control, while the actor portraying Hyde used strong physicality and an aggressive presence on stage. Together, they clearly showed the contrast between the two characters. The transformation scenes felt painful and realistic, which made them convincing for the audience. The supporting actors helped show the strict and moral Victorian society, even though some roles were less memorable than others.

The design elements supported the story well. The set was simple but flexible and could represent different locations easily. The lighting used shadows and strong contrasts to show the theme of duality. Sound effects and music created tension and added to the dark atmosphere without being distracting. The costumes helped the audience understand the characters, especially Hyde, whose appearance became more chaotic over time.

Several scenes were particularly effective, especially the transformation scenes. These moments clearly showed the danger of hiding one’s darker side. Overall, the production was successful and easy to understand. Even though some ideas were shown too clearly, the performance was engaging and gave a strong interpretation of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
